LAPAROSCOPIC GALLBLADDER SURGERY
Gallbladder stone surgery is usually done with keyhole or laparoscopic surgery. This is usually done under general anesthesia and the patient may need hospitalization duration of one or two days. Duration may depend on the severity of the symptoms and severity of the complications.
This is usually done with General Anaesthesia and the patient may need four to five days of rest post-operatively and can go back to routine work in five days to a week time.
OPEN CHOLECYSTECTOMY
Sometimes in some patients with a severe infection in the gallbladder open surgery may be required, this is called open cholecystectomy.
DIET AND LIFE AFTER GALLBLADDER SURGERY
Most of the patients do well after gallbladder surgery and are able to eat normally and lead a normal lifestyle and work.
GALLBLADDER POLYPS
Many times there may be some polyps in the gallbladder which are small projections from the mucosal surface of the gallbladder.
Mostly they are incidental finding and needs observation. However, rapidly growing polyps approaching around 1 cm in size will need surgery.
GALLBLADDER CANCER
Sometimes long staying gallbladder stones and infection can lead to gallbladder cancer for which surgery radical cholecystectomy may be necessary.
Gall Bladder Cancer is more common in North East India and needs CT scan or MRI to diagnose.Surgery involves removing a part of adjacent liver along with the Gall Bladder and surrounding nodes.Patients may need further adjutant therapy like chemotherapy after surgery.

ACALCULOUS CHOLECYSTITIS
Sometimes the gallbladder may become infected even without any stones, this is called acalculous cholecystitis.
This is more common in diabetic patients and patients in the ICU.This is usually treated with antibiotics. If not improved with medical management, surgery may be necessary.
WHAT DIET TO FOLLOW IF YOU ARE DIAGNOSED WITH GALLSTONES?
It is better to avoid oily, spicy, fatty food since this may cause the stones from the gallbladder to migrate down and also may precipitate pain in the gallbladder and precipitate complications.
GALLSTONES IN PREGNANCY AND POST PARTUM PERIOD
The incidence of gallbladder stones diagnosed during pregnancy and immediately after delivery is raising. May be associated with hormones in pregnancy. Mostly managed conservatively during pregnancy and operated after delivery.
ARE GALLSTONES RELATED TO KIDNEY STONES?
No, Gallstones are not related to kidney stones and have entirely different pathology and have no connection with kidney stones.
